Soapstone
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock. It is composed of talc. It is very soft. It is used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, refractory materials, baby powder, chewing gum, toothpaste, sculptures, to name a few. It is also used to make woodburning stoves, counter tops, fireplaces and ovens. A very versatile material.

The MOH scale
This a practical method of comparing hardness or scratch resistance
of minerals. It was invented in 1822 by a german mineralogist, Frederich Mohs.
Mohs took 10 well known, easily available minerals and arranged them in order
of their “scratch hardness”. If a mineral to be tested can be scratched by
a known mineral from the list, then it is softer than that mineral. If it will scratch
another mineral then it is harder. This gives a quick reference of how hard a mineral is.
On the mohs scale a pencil lead has a hardness of 1, a finger nail 2.5, copper penny 3.5, knife blade 5.5, window glass 5.5, steel file 6.5 +.This scale is not a linear scale but is somewhat arbitrary. The higher the number the harder the material.
